Well, I finally jumped on it Sunday. I've already bought 10 twenty round magz and the SAI Gen4 Mount to hold a Nikon M-308 4-16x42 BDC scope on her. Now we wait for the transfer. I know a few AR's are about to find new homes now that I'm in the big boy leagues. I'm new to this platform. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Bipods? Rounds? I know some of you old hands out there are experts on this one. I'd like to be among your expertise levels one day...

Ammo and loads are easy: gun was built for the 7.62x51 NATO, and vice-versa.
General rule of thumb: if you won't drink the water, don't buy the MilSurp ammo. Avoid the Indian stuff, look for the US or Aussie.
M118 is your best friend.
Reloading data at http://www.zediker.com/downloads/m14.html. Key points are to use the published NATO data, proper primers (critical) and full-length resize (also critical).

I'd buy a standard M1A stock as a back-up for just in case something goes wrong with it.
Would avoid reloads as Springfield attributes 'Slam-fire' to reused casings.
I've a standard stock M1A and mounted my optics using the Basset mounts.
There is an old SF saying that goes: "if it looks stupid but it works, it ain't
stupid". That is the case with the Basset mount.
You will absolutely need lock-tight for the rings at the scope, but not for the mount to the M1A.
Good (but not great) 7.62 ammo out of east European countries.
Weapon is a 'reach out and touch somebody' tool.
Suggest that you keep the 5.56 for the close-in capability.
Garry, slam fires attributed to neck resizing, not full-length resizing (and corp lawyers doing a CYA). Full length resizing always necessary for semi autos.

155 grain Palma Match, over BL(C)2 was my goto back in the service rifle competition. It loved that load.
