GALVESTON, Texas -- Galveston police say an organized gang of
juveniles, as young as 11 years old, are behind an "alarming increase"
in robberies, burglaries, stolen cars, and carjackings in Galveston this
summer.
Faced with as many as 25 robberies from July to August,
Police Chief Henry Porretto organized a task force to target the sudden
uptick in crime. What his officers found clearly shocked him.
"This
is a lot of children to be arresting. 11 years old, 12 years old with a
gun," said Porretto at a Tuesday afternoon news conference.
To
date the task force has arrested 15 juveniles all of whom police believe
are members or associates of the Omega Crips gang. Most of them,
including gang leadership, have been charged with engaging in organized
criminal activity. Two of the juveniles are female.
Big story here
